Kamikochi is located in the southern part of Hida Takayama in the western part of Nagano Prefecture, Japan. It is about 1,500 meters above sea level. It is part of the Chubu Mountain National Park and is designated as a national cultural property of Japan. According to legend, the gods worshipped at Nagano Hotaka Shrine came here, so it had the old name of “Kamigakichi”, which was later changed to “Kamikochi.”
The beauty of Kamikochi was discovered in the book by the British missionary “Walter Weston” known as the “Father of Modern Japanese Mountaineering” at the end of the 19th century. Written in the book, so there are landmarks named after these two people in the current Kamikochi area.
